ALPHONSE SHELTON (1905-1976) WAS BORN IN LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND AND SHORTLY THEREAFTER CAME TO BOSTON WITH HIS PARENTS. HE STUDIED AT THE MUSEUM SCHOOL OF FINE ARTS AND, BECOMING INTERESTED IN THE SEA, MOVED TO THE COAST OF MAINE WHERE HE SPENT THE REMAINING PART OF HIS LIFE PAINTING ITS RUGGED COASTLINE. THIS FINE IMAGE BY SHELTON CAPTURES A MOMENT, REDUCED TO ITS ESSENCE BY A MASTER PAINTER'S EYE. IT RETAINS ITS ORIGINAL FRAME (WHICH, ACCORDING TO SOME RESEARCH, MAY HAVE BEEN MADE BY HIM).
